In 2001, David Horvath of New York signed off his love letter to Sun-Min Kim in Korea with a sketch of a plump orange character wearing an apron. Sun-Min replied with a plush doll modeled after the figure. The Uglydolls were born and become an overnight sensation.

That’s the short version of the most romantic story in toy business.

The full version includes the details of Sun-Min’s labor-of-love in hand-sewing 1500 Uglydolls over a period of 18 months and the fact that they sold-out almost instantly wherever they were found. And how David and Sun-Min reunited at the 2003 International Toy Fair in New York. And how they plan to be married soon.

And now, thanks to Critterbox, Uglydolls have arrived on the urban vinyl scene. Smooth, round and cast in a beautiful fashion-forward color palette. Uglydolls are hot, and at the center of a designer toy invasion that stretches from the Whitney Museum to Barney’s New York.
